Notch apps for Macs without a notch
You do not need a notched MacBook to benefit from the idea. A strip at the top centre of the screen is useful on any display, and several notch apps draw one when no notch exists.
What changes without a notch
The hardware notch is black and fixed, so on a notched MacBook an app can blend into it. Without a notch there is nothing to blend into, so the app draws its own small black pill, usually a little narrower than a real notch, at the same spot.
What stays the same
Everything inside the panel works the same: the tools, the animation and the open on hover behaviour. The pill sits above other windows and does not take keyboard focus unless you open a tool that needs typing.
How to check an app before you buy
- Does its page mention external displays or Macs without a notch?
- Does it describe a fallback, such as a floating pill?
- Does it list a macOS version you can run?
NotchStar works this way: on a Mac without a notch it shows a small floating pill at the top centre, and expands from there. See what is a notch app for the basics.
