The short version. NotchStar has no account and measures nothing by default. It never sends what you copy, write, play or schedule. If you choose to, it sends anonymous version info once a day, and you can turn that off at any time. This website counts page views and downloads without cookies.

The NotchStar app

  • Clipboard history stays in memory on your Mac, holds up to 50 items, and is cleared when you quit. The app skips items that password managers mark as concealed.
  • Quick Notes and your teleprompter script are stored in the app's preferences on your Mac.
  • The file shelf remembers where files are, not their contents, and is cleared when you quit.
  • Calendar and Reminders are read through macOS when you allow access. They are not copied or uploaded.
  • The Mirror shows a live camera preview only while its tab is open. Nothing is recorded or saved.
  • Now Playing reads what is playing from macOS. When using the AppleScript fallback with Spotify, the album image may load from Spotify's servers.
  • System stats are read locally and never leave your Mac.

Anonymous version info (optional, off by default)

The first time you open the Home tab, NotchStar asks once whether to share anonymous version info. Nothing is sent unless you say yes, and you can change your answer in Settings, General, Privacy.

If you say yes, once a day the app sends one small event to notchstar.com, which passes it to our analytics provider, PostHog, in the EU. The event contains exactly these things:

  • the NotchStar version and build number
  • your macOS version and your chip (Apple silicon or Intel)
  • whether you are on the free trial, licensed or expired
  • a random ID generated on your Mac, so we can count installs without knowing who you are

It never contains your name, email, license key, Mac name, files, clipboard, notes, calendar or location, and we ask PostHog not to store IP addresses or build person profiles. If you say no or turn it off, the random ID is deleted. We use this to see which versions are in use and when it is safe to stop supporting an old macOS.

Licensing

Activating a license sends your license key and your Mac's name (for example "Abhay's MacBook Pro") to Dodo Payments, our payment provider and merchant of record, so it can count your devices. About once a week the app asks Dodo whether the license is still valid. If you are offline, nothing happens and the app keeps working. During the free trial the app contacts no server. Dodo handles your payment details and email under its own privacy policy; we never see your card.

This website

This site sets no cookies and loads no third party scripts. It counts page views and clicks on the download and buy buttons with PostHog, sent through our own domain. Each event has the page address, the website you came from (the domain only), and a random ID that lives in your browser tab and disappears when you close it. We do not store IP addresses or build profiles. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, nothing is counted. Like any website, our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and requested pages.
