A shelf and an AirDrop zone in the notch
Drop it now, decide where it goes later.
What it does.
- Drag toward the notch
- Start dragging a file and move toward the top of the screen. The notch opens on the Shelf, so you never have to open it first.
- AirDrop in one drop
- Drop files on the AirDrop zone and the macOS AirDrop picker opens with them already attached. Choose a device and you are done.
- A shelf that gets out of the way
- Drop files on the shelf to park them. Drag any file back out into a folder, a message or an app when you are ready.
- Finder style icons
- Files keep their real icons and names, with a context menu to reveal them in Finder, send them over AirDrop or remove them.
Dragging files between windows is clumsy: you open two Finder windows, or you stack things on the Desktop and clean up later. A shelf gives dragged files somewhere to wait.
One gesture for two jobs
The Shelf tab has two zones side by side. The AirDrop zone sends whatever you drop on it. The shelf zone keeps what you drop for later. Both react as soon as a file hovers over them, with a highlight so you know where it will land.
Why it opens by itself
When you start dragging a file and move toward the notch, NotchStar notices the drag and opens the Shelf tab, even if it was closed. If you let go somewhere else, it closes again. You can also pin the notch open from its header.
What to know
Because the shelf keeps references, it stays tiny and fast, but a file you delete from disk disappears from the shelf too. For a longer lived home for text, try Quick Notes.
- The shelf holds references to your files, not copies. If you move or delete the original, its shelf entry stops working.
- The shelf empties when NotchStar quits.
- Drag to open reacts to files only, not to text or images dragged from a web page.
Questions about File Shelf and AirDrop.
Does the shelf copy or move my files?
Neither. It remembers where each file is, like an alias. Dragging a file out of the shelf uses the original file.
Can I AirDrop to my iPhone?
Yes. The AirDrop zone uses the standard macOS AirDrop sharing sheet, so every nearby device that can receive AirDrop appears there.
Do I need to open the notch before dragging a file?
No. Drag a file toward the top of the screen near the notch and it opens on the Shelf tab by itself.
